Houseplant Detective: What’s That Growing In That Planter?

Sometimes a struggling houseplant gives you an obvious clue. A yellow leaf, a wilted stem or dry soil can point you in the right direction.
Other times, you look into the pot and discover something you definitely weren’t expecting.
That’s what happened with my aluminum plant (Pilea cadierei).
I had already been watching the plant because it wasn’t looking quite right. Then, when I took a closer look at the soil, I found something much more interesting: white fungal-looking growth and small yellow mushrooms growing in the pot.
That turned a routine houseplant problem into a Houseplant Detective investigation.
The First Clue: Something Was Wrong With the Soil
The aluminum plant had been growing in soil that was holding more moisture than I wanted. I was also dealing with fungus gnats, another clue that conditions inside the pot were staying damp.
When I began examining the soil more closely, I discovered white growth beneath the surface. Then came an even more obvious clue: small yellow mushrooms.

Mushrooms appearing in a houseplant pot can be alarming, but their presence doesn’t necessarily mean the plant itself is diseased.
Fungi feed on organic material in potting mixes, particularly material that is beginning to decompose.
The mushrooms were therefore telling me something useful about what was happening inside the pot.
The Yellow Mushroom Wasn’t the Real Mystery
The mushroom itself wasn’t necessarily what was hurting the aluminum plant. It was a clue.

The combination of mushrooms, fungal growth and fungus gnats suggested that the potting mix was remaining moist and contained plenty of organic material for fungi to feed on.
That distinction matters.
Simply removing a mushroom might make the pot look better, but it doesn’t change the conditions that allowed it to grow.
The real question became: What was happening beneath the surface?
Looking Below the Surface
I removed roughly the top two inches of the old potting mix so I could get a better look at what was happening.

This is where inspecting a struggling houseplant can tell you much more than looking at the leaves alone.
Soil condition, drainage, moisture and what is happening around the roots are all part of the investigation.
The goal wasn’t simply to get rid of a mushroom. It was to correct the growing conditions that had allowed the problem to develop.
What This Aluminum Plant Taught Me
One of the biggest lessons from this plant was not to focus on a single symptom.
- The fungus gnats were a clue
- The white growth was another clue
- The yellow mushrooms were another
And the condition of the potting mix helped connect them. None of those clues should be considered by itself.
Together, however, they tell you much more about what is happening in the small ecosystem inside a houseplant pot.
That’s really what Houseplant Detective is about.
Every plant leaves clues.
The trick is learning how to put those clues together before deciding what the plant actually needs.
Are Yellow Mushrooms Particular to Aluminum Plants?
No. The yellow mushrooms growing in my aluminum plant weren’t there because it was an aluminum plant.
The bright yellow mushroom commonly found in houseplant soil is Leucocoprinus birnbaumii, often called the yellow houseplant mushroom or flowerpot parasol.
It can turn up in all kinds of indoor planters and is thought to hitch a ride in potting mixes and other organic growing materials.
It is a saprotrophic fungus. In simple terms, that means it gets its food by breaking down dead and decaying organic matter rather than feeding on the living roots of the plant.
That makes an important distinction in this investigation: the mushroom wasn’t necessarily the problem. It was evidence of the conditions inside the planter.
What the Yellow Mushroom Was Telling Me
Leucocoprinus birnbaumii likes warm, moist conditions and organic material it can decompose.
Those are exactly the conditions that can develop when an organic-rich potting mix remains wet for extended periods.
For the fungus, that’s great. For many houseplants, it isn’t.
A mushroom doesn’t mean that root rot has already started, but soil that remains wet long enough to support mushrooms can also create conditions where roots struggle to get enough oxygen and root problems become more likely.

Organic matter isn’t inherently bad, either. Outdoors, its ability to retain moisture can be extremely useful. Inside a container, however, a fine, moisture-retentive mix may stay wet much longer than we realize.
That’s why many indoor plants do better in a looser, airier growing medium containing materials such as bark, perlite or pumice that improve drainage and allow more oxygen around the roots.
Different plants have different requirements, of course. A moisture-loving peace lily, for example, tolerates conditions that would be much less suitable for a plant that prefers its growing medium to dry considerably between waterings.
There is another reason not to ignore those little yellow mushrooms if you have children or pets. Leucocoprinus birnbaumii should not be eaten, so mushrooms that appear in an accessible planter should be removed and discarded.
Why Simply Pulling Out the Mushroom Doesn’t Solve It
You can remove the visible mushroom, but that doesn’t necessarily remove the fungus.
Most of the fungus exists within the growing medium as a network of microscopic filaments called mycelium.
Once established in a pot, completely eliminating it can be difficult without replacing the growing medium and cleaning the container.
And even then, fungal spores are everywhere.
Instead of obsessing over eliminating every trace of the fungus, I was more interested in the clue it had given me: Why was this planter staying wet enough for mushrooms and fungal growth to flourish?
Looking Below the Surface
I removed roughly two inches of potting mix from around the aluminum plant so I could see what was happening beneath the surface.
One of the first things I checked was the smell.
The soil didn’t smell foul, sour or rotten. It smelled earthy. That was encouraging. There was no obvious rotten odor suggesting that I had uncovered badly decomposing roots.

Rather than immediately tearing apart the root system and putting an already stressed plant through another major disturbance, I decided to let it sit.
Removing the upper layer exposed more of the remaining potting mix to the air and allowed it to begin drying.
Once the growing medium has dried enough to work with more easily, I can remove more of the old soil from around the roots and transplant the aluminum plant into a clean pot with fresh, better-draining growing medium.
The yellow mushroom may have started this investigation, but it ultimately pointed to something much more useful: what was happening in the soil where I couldn’t see it.

That little mushroom didn’t suddenly appear from nowhere. Fungal spores or microscopic fungal growth can already be present in potting mix, remaining unnoticed until conditions favor growth.
Even a new, factory-sealed bag of potting mix shouldn’t be assumed to be sterile. Many mixes contain organic materials such as peat moss, compost, pine bark or coco coir.
Fungi and their spores are a natural part of these organic materials and the environment around us.
Under conditions that don’t favor their growth, they may remain dormant or simply produce no visible mushrooms for a long time.
Give them the right combination of moisture, warmth and decaying organic matter, however, and fungal growth can become much more active.
That’s likely what I was seeing in my planter. The mushroom wasn’t something that suddenly attacked my aluminum plant. The conditions inside the pot had become favorable enough for something already present in that little ecosystem to reveal itself.
And that made the yellow mushroom one of the most useful clues in the entire investigation.
