I Grew a Snake Plant in a Glass Container: Here’s What Happened

Most houseplant guides will tell you not to grow a snake plant in a glass container. Without drainage holes, excess water can become trapped around the roots and lead to rot. Naturally, that warning made me curious.

What would actually happen if I tried it?

Rather than using the setup as a permanent recommendation, I treated it as an experiment.

First I purchased a Fernwood Mikado (Dracaena ‘Fernwood Mikado’), formerly known as Sansevieria Fernwood Mikado, at a local garden store that sold only succulents.



Fernwood Mikado is a great choice for my experiment as it is a compact cultivar known for its drought tolerance, slow growth, and ability to adapt to a variety of indoor conditions.

Preparing The Glass Container

I built several layers inside the container: pebbles, soil, more pebbles, and additional soil before planting the snake plant.



My goal was simple: observe the plant closely and see how it responded over time.

To my surprise, after 12 months, the plant did not decline. In fact, it began producing larger leaves than it had previously.

New growth appeared by 6 months and eventually the plant produced pups after 8 months.

Because the container was transparent, I could monitor water movement and watch the water level in the bottom layer of pebbles.

I initially pour 1.5 cups of filtered water. As the soil was dry, it soaked up most of the water. I waited two weeks and watered again adding 1.5 cups of filtered water.

On this occasion water had drained to the bottom layer of pebbles. I repeated two weeks later. Again, some of the water drained to the bottom layer.

After 1 month of transplanting and water once every two weeks, was now about 1 to 1.5 inches of water at the bottom layer.

At month 2, I waited until the top 1 – 2 inches of soil was bone dry. I watered with only 8 ounces of water and this is what I have done from months 3 -12. I noticed the water level has not gone above 2 inches before watering again.

One of the most important lessons from this experiment was that observation matters.

Instead of following a rigid watering schedule, I paid attention to the soil, the water level, and the plant itself.

The leaves, growth rate, and overall appearance provided valuable clues about the plant’s condition.

Does this mean every snake plant should be grown in glass? Probably not.

Traditional pots with drainage holes remain the safest option for most growers.



However, this experiment reminded me that plants do not always read the rule book.

Sometimes the best way to learn is to test an idea, observe the results, and let the plant tell its own story.

For now, my snake plant continues to grow, and the experiment continues. Case not yet closed.


What You Should Know Before Growing a Snake Plant in Glass

While my experiment has been successful so far, glass containers are not the traditional recommendation for snake plants.

If you choose to grow a snake plant in a container without drainage holes, understanding the risks is essential.

Tips for Success if You Keep Using Glass

If you absolutely insist on keeping a glass container (like I did), careful maintenance becomes even more important.

Use a fast-draining soil

A cactus or succulent potting mix helps prevent excess moisture from remaining around the roots. When I planted my snake plant, I used a potting soil formulated specifically for succulents.

Add a pebble reservoir

A layer of pebbles at the bottom of the container with a layer of soil and another layer of pebbles can help separate roots from standing water.

Water sparingly

Snake plants prefer to dry thoroughly between waterings. Overwatering is the most common cause of failure.

Monitor the reservoir

One advantage of a clear glass container is that you can see if excess water is collecting at the bottom.

Avoid over-fertilizing

Too much fertilizer can lead to salt buildup in containers without drainage.

Succulent potting soil is formulated to dry out quickly and mimic arid, desert-like conditions.

Unlike standard houseplant soils that tend to retain moisture, these specialized blends contain coarse, porous ingredients that improve drainage and increase airflow around the roots.

Because snake plants are highly susceptible to root rot when kept consistently wet, a fast-draining succulent mix helps reduce excess moisture while providing the root aeration necessary for healthy growth.

This makes succulent soil an excellent choice for snake plants, especially when growing them in containers without drainage holes.

Watering

Allow the soil to dry thoroughly before watering again. Snake plants store water in their thick leaves and are much more tolerant of drought than overly wet soil. Overwatering is the most common cause of problems.

Why Snake Plants Prefer a Snug Pot

In my own experience, snake plants seem to prefer life in a relatively confined root zone.

Years ago, I moved a snake plant into a container that was significantly larger than its root system required. The plant gradually declined rather than thriving.

When I spoke with an experienced nursery professional, they explained that snake plants are slow-rooting plants that generally perform best when only moved into a container about 1–2 inches wider than their current pot.

Since then, I have followed that advice and have had much better results. My Fernwood Mikado continues to produce new pups while remaining in a relatively confined container.

While some growers successfully move snake plants into larger pots, many enthusiasts prefer small incremental upgrades because they more closely match the plant’s naturally compact growth habit.

Benefits of a Snug Pot

Prevents overwatering

A smaller container holds less soil, allowing the growing medium to dry more quickly between waterings. This helps protect roots and rhizomes from excess moisture and reduces the risk of root rot.

Encourages compact, vigorous growth

When a snake plant is moved into a pot that is significantly larger than its root system, it often spends months directing energy into expanding underground rhizomes and roots rather than producing new leaves and pups.

My Fernwood Mikado has spent a year growing in a relatively confined container and continues to produce new pups.



Only consider moving a snake plant into a larger container when the rhizomes begin visibly distorting the pot or when the plant becomes unstable.

In my experience, snake plants seem to prefer a snug root zone rather than a large amount of unused soil.

Once the roots encounter the sides of the container, the plant often shifts more energy into producing new growth above the soil surface.

Underground rhizomes may activate dormant growth points, resulting in the emergence of new pups around the base of the plant.

A snug container also holds less soil, allowing the growing medium to dry more quickly between waterings.

Because snake plants are adapted to periods of drought, this wet-to-dry cycle helps keep roots healthy and reduces the risk of moisture-related problems.

While every plant is different, many growers find that snake plants remain healthier, produce more offsets, and maintain a more compact growth habit when kept slightly rootbound rather than being planted in oversized containers.

May encourage blooming

While flowering is uncommon indoors, mature rootbound snake plants are more likely to produce fragrant greenish-white flower stalks under favorable conditions.

Stabilizes tall foliage

The dense network of roots and rhizomes creates a strong anchor that helps support the plant’s upright, sword-like leaves and reduces the likelihood of the container tipping over.

Matches their natural growth habit

Snake plants spread through thick underground rhizomes. In nature, they often grow in crowded clumps, making them well adapted to living in relatively confined spaces for long periods.

Root Rot



Usually caused by overwatering or poorly draining soil. Symptoms include yellowing leaves, soft foliage, and mushy roots.

Leaf Curling

Often caused by underwatering, root damage, or environmental stress.

These natural reserves allow snake plants to tolerate conditions that would quickly stress many other houseplants, including extended periods of drought, low light, and occasional neglect.

Brown Leaf Tips

Can result from inconsistent watering, low humidity, or mineral buildup in the soil.

Pests

Occasionally affected by mealybugs and spider mites. Inspect leaves regularly and treat early if pests are discovered.

Why Snake Plants Are Popular

Snake plants have earned a reputation as one of the easiest houseplants to grow.

Their adaptability, drought tolerance, and striking architectural appearance make them a favorite among both beginners and experienced plant enthusiasts.

They tolerate neglect

Snake plants store water in their thick succulent leaves, allowing them to survive for weeks without watering. This makes them an excellent choice for frequent travelers or forgetful plant owners.

They adapt to a wide range of lighting conditions

While they grow fastest in bright, indirect light, snake plants can tolerate lower light levels better than many other houseplants.

They are often found thriving in offices, bedrooms, and other indoor spaces where natural light is limited.

They handle typical indoor conditions well

Snake plants tolerate dry household air, seasonal humidity changes, and a broad range of indoor temperatures.

Once established, they require very little attention compared to many tropical houseplants.

They are long-lived plants

Many snake plants can live 20 to 50 years or more, slowly producing new pups and expanding through underground rhizomes.

Their remarkable longevity comes from their ability to store both water and energy within their thick leaves and rhizome system.

They come in many forms



From broad-leaf varieties to compact cultivars like Fernwood Mikado, snake plants offer a wide range of sizes, colors, and growth habits suitable for almost any indoor space.
