Why I Stopped Using Potting Soil Straight From the Bag: Building a Better Mix for Houseplants

For years, many of us have done the same thing.

Bring home a new houseplant, grab a bag of potting soil, move the plant into a bigger pot, water it, and call the job finished.

After all, it says “indoor potting mix” on the bag.

It should work, right?

Why “Indoor Potting Mix” Doesn’t Always Mean Every Indoor Plant

The label makes it sound simple. One bag. Every houseplant. Problem solved.



But a Swiss cheese plant and a Fittonia Ruby Lime are a perfect example of why that doesn’t always work.

Both are tropical houseplants. Both have beautiful foliage. But below the soil surface, they are very different plants.



A Swiss cheese plant (Monstera adansonii) naturally climbs and develops a larger, stronger root system designed to anchor itself and search for nutrients.

It benefits from a chunkier mix with ingredients like orchid bark and perlite that allow better airflow around the roots.



A Fittonia (nerve plant) has a much finer, shallower root system and prefers a mix that stays more consistently moist without becoming heavy or waterlogged.

Same shelf at the store. Same “houseplant” label. Different needs.


What About Fertilizer Already Added To Potting Mix?

Many indoor potting mixes already contain added fertilizer, but that does not mean every plant will use those nutrients the same way.



A fast-growing Monstera pushing out long vines and new leaves may use nutrients differently than a smaller Fittonia growing close to the soil surface.

The amount of fertilizer a plant needs depends on how quickly it grows, the size of the root system, available light, and the season.

Pre-added fertilizer is only a starting point. Over time, watering slowly removes nutrients from the soil, and each plant’s growth habits determine when additional feeding may be needed.

This is another reason watching your plant matters more than following a strict schedule.

Pre-fertilized soil removes some of your control because the feeding decision has already been made before you even know what your plant needs.

That is why I started looking at potting soil as an ingredient — not the finished recipe.

After rescuing struggling plants, experimenting with different growing methods, and paying closer attention to what happens below the surface, I realized something important:

A healthy houseplant doesn’t start with the leaves. It starts with the roots.

My Swiss cheese plant (Monstera adansonii) transplant became the perfect example of why matching the soil environment to the plant matters.


The Case of the Swiss Cheese Plant Transplant

When I transplanted my Swiss cheese plant, the first thing I investigated wasn’t the leaves. It was the root system.



The plant had roots growing through the bottom drainage holes of the pot. At first glance, seeing roots outside the container can make you think the entire plant is severely root bound.

But once removed from the pot, the real story was different. The main root ball was still healthy.

The roots growing through the bottom were explorer roots — searching beyond the container for more space, water, and nutrients.



Instead of aggressively tearing apart the entire root system, I trimmed back those outside roots and focused on giving the main root ball a better growing environment.

That meant changing the soil.


Why I Don’t Use Potting Soil Alone Anymore

Regular potting soil isn’t necessarily bad.

The problem is that many indoor plants are grown in environments very different from a typical bag of soil.

Plants like Swiss cheese vines naturally grow in tropical areas where their roots move through loose organic material, tree debris, and pockets of air.

Their roots aren’t sitting inside a dense, wet block of soil.

Over time, some potting mixes can become compacted. When those tiny air spaces disappear, water stays trapped longer and oxygen movement decreases.

The plant may look like it has a watering problem.

But sometimes it actually has a soil structure problem.


My House Plant Detective Potting Mix

Instead of replacing potting soil completely, I started improving it.



My basic tropical houseplant blend:

2 parts indoor potting soil

1 part orchid bark

1 part perlite

Simple ingredients. Big difference. Each ingredient has a job.


Potting Soil: The Foundation

The potting soil is still important.

It provides:

  • organic material
  • moisture retention
  • nutrients
  • support for the root system

The goal isn’t to eliminate soil. The goal is to prevent it from becoming too heavy.


Orchid Bark: Creating Room for Roots

Orchid bark is not just for orchids.

Many tropical houseplants benefit from a chunkier growing medium.

The bark creates small spaces throughout the soil that allow roots to move and grow.

It helps:

  • improve airflow
  • reduce compaction
  • create better drainage
  • mimic natural growing conditions

Think of orchid bark as adding structure. It keeps the soil from collapsing tightly around the roots.

Many orchid potting mixes are not just bark alone.

They are usually a combination of chunky, lightweight ingredients designed to create airflow while still holding enough moisture for roots.

Dry Forest Moss

Dry forest moss helps retain moisture, slows how quickly the mix dries out, and creates a slightly more humid environment around the roots.

Perlite

Perlite has a lightweight, porous structure that improves airflow and drainage. It helps prevent soil from becoming dense, compacted, or staying wet for too long.

Pine Bark

Pine bark adds larger pieces throughout the soil mix, creating air pockets around the roots. This improves drainage and helps reduce problems caused by overly wet soil.

Coco Peat

Coco peat holds moisture while keeping the mix lighter than traditional soil. It helps balance water retention with root aeration.

For climbing tropical plants like my Swiss cheese plant, adding orchid mix helped create a looser growing environment that better matched how the roots naturally grow.


Perlite: The Ingredient That Helps Roots Breathe

Those little white pieces you see in potting mixes are more important than they look.

Perlite is a lightweight volcanic material added to improve soil structure.

It helps create air pockets throughout the mix.

Perlite does not feed the plant.

It helps create a better environment where roots can function.

Healthy roots need water.

But they also need oxygen.


What Happened After Repotting My Swiss Cheese Plant?

After trimming the escaped roots and moving my Swiss cheese plant into its new soil mix, I waited.

Plants tell you when something is working.

Within about two weeks, new growth started appearing.

The plant wasn’t shocked from losing those outside roots because the main root system remained healthy.

The new mix gave the roots something better: space.


The Biggest Lesson From Making My Own Potting Mix

Repotting taught me to stop asking only: Does my plant need water?

Now I ask:

  • What happens after I water?
  • Does the soil drain properly?
  • Does it stay wet too long?
  • Are the roots getting oxygen?
  • Are new leaves appearing?

Houseplants are constantly giving clues.

The leaves show symptoms, but many times the real investigation starts underground.

Sometimes a struggling plant doesn’t need a bigger pot, more fertilizer, or another watering schedule.

Sometimes it just needs a better place for its roots to grow.

Because every plant has a story — you just have to investigate.
