Cooking With Cured Meats

Cooking With Cured Meats

Cured meats are a flavorful and versatile addition to any dish, offering a unique depth of taste that can elevate your cooking to new heights.

These meats are preserved through methods such as salting, smoking, or air-drying, resulting in a concentrated flavor profile that is both savory and intense.

Common types of cured meats include prosciutto, like with this Eggs Benedict With Hollandaise Sauce, salami, pastrami, pancetta, Spanish chorizo, pepperoni, summer sausage, linguiça sausage, like this Pouched Eggs With Portuguese Sausage And Peas, and bacon among many others.

Each offers a unique taste and texture, making them versatile ingredients in a variety of cuisines.

Cured meats can be mouthwatering and flavorful adding depth and complexity to a dish as they have a rich umami.

When cooking with cured meats, it’s important to consider their saltiness and richness, as they can easily overpower other ingredients.

Incorporate them into pasta dishes, leafy greens salads, sandwiches, like this Hot Pastrami Sandwich With Provolone Cheese & Roasted Sweet Peppers.

Charcuterie boards (a platter of cheeses, fruits, and cured meats) are a great way to serve cured meats or use them to make party favorite finger foods, like this Greek Yogurt Dill Spread with Ham and Red Cabbage On Crisp Bread.

You can even add the meat to a breakfast or brunch frittata, like this Pancetta And Sweet Pepper Frittata With Queso Fresco, for a delicious burst of flavor that will leave your taste buds wanting more.

When cooking with cured meats, it’s important to remember that they are already seasoned and can be quite salty, so be mindful of how much additional salt you add to your dish.

Whether you’re using them to add depth to a pasta sauce, flavor to a salad, or as a standalone snack, cured meats can bring a savory punch to your cooking that is sure to impress your taste buds.

Tips On Storing Cured Meat

Keep in mind most cured meats are precooked before purchasing them and they do have an expiration date.

An exception will be cured bacon as it is typically sold raw and has to be cooked before consuming. Like with this, Flatbread with Zucchini Smoked Bacon and Mascarpone Cheese.

Most cured meats are package and sold off the dry shelf, such as summer sausage for example. While others are purchased from the refrigerated section of your local market, like Spanish chorizo.

Take note that though Spanish chorizo is cured, Mexican chorizo is sold raw. Therefore, the two are not the same.
