Making A Bread Pudding

Bread pudding is the perfect dessert for using up stale bread or day old bread. It’s a classic dessert that has been enjoyed for centuries.

It start out as a simple dish of bread, milk, and sugar. Simple ingredients that resulted in a delicious and satisfying dessert.

However, as it gained popularity in many cuisines, variations and additions were introduced, such as dried or fresh fruits, nuts and spices like cinnamon and nutmeg. Even cream in some recipes have replaced milk.

Chefs and home cooks have experimented with different types of bread, such as French bread, croissants, brioche, sourdough, and whole grain breads.

In some regions, bread pudding is even served as a savory dish, incorporating ingredients like cheese and herbs.

Bread pudding is a testament to the resourcefulness and creativity of ancient civilizations who were able to turn something as simple as stale bread into a delicious and comforting dish.

Making A Bread Pudding

A bread pudding recipe may reference stale bread as “day old bread.” Though, you can use dried stale bread that has been sitting on your kitchen counter for a week or more.

The bread can be semidry to very dry. Even rock hard dry.

And don’t worry, stale bread hasn’t spoiled and is still perfectly fine to eat, just not as delicious.

Using a good serrated knife, cut the dry bread into small chunks, about 1/2 inch or smaller.

Mix the eggs, milk or heavy cream, sugar, vanilla and spices in a large bowl. Add the stale bread pieces and mix in.

Next add any dried or fresh fruit, nuts and chocolate you may be using and mix to incorporate.

For the benefit of the dried stale bread, let the mixture soak for at least 30 minutes. Some recipes will say 15 minutes. We found 30 minutes or more insures the dried bread is fully saturated with the additional flavors, such as the vanilla and spices.

Just remember these three things about bread pudding:

  1. The foundation of ingredients are simple, eggs, milk and sugar
  2. It’s a versatile dish, add any additional ingredients you like
  3. Use what ever “day old bread” you have on hand – French loaf, croissants, sourdough, white or whole wheat
